Description

When you book with us to complete your RYA Day Skipper, Devon and Cornwall become the spectacular backdrop to your training. This course is for aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills.

Booking your RYA Day Skipper training with Devon Sailing Experiences offers you the advantage of your own double cabin* aboard our spacious yacht. From the moment you join us at King Point Marina, Plymouth, you will immediately notice that your spotlessly clean yacht is maintained to the highest standard. This provides a high-quality platform for you to learn to skipper a short passage and take responsibility for your crew, with the instructor on hand to offer advice and encouragement and to ensure your safety.

Before this course, if you are not sure that your sailing is up to speed, a good way to check is by taking part in our RYA Competent Crew course. If you need to brush up your navigation skills, you should take our Day Skipper Shorebased course.

While training with Devon Sailing Experiences, not only will you be working to achieve your RYA Day Skipper, Devon and Cornwall will provide your spectacular scenery and sailing ground. Your west-country based training course offers some of the most beautiful moorings and anchorages along the coast. Upon leaving Plymouth Sound you may choose to head to Cornwall: Falmouth offers marina facilities in the heart of the town, giving you and your crew the opportunity to explore the local pubs while you discuss your plans for the next day. Mylor, which is quieter and a little further up the river, also offers marina facilities which are modern and well-maintained. At Mylor you will find a yacht club, bar and restaurant. If, as part of your Day Skipper training you choose to plot a course to the picturesque Cornish town of Fowey, you will find a warm welcome with plenty of places to enjoy a pleasant evening ashore.

By booking with Devon Sailing Experiences, you will enjoy the convenience of finding us located close to Plymouth mainline train station – our base location, King Point Marina in Plymouth, is less than 5-minutes away in a taxi. This small, modern marina offers high quality, well-maintained washing and showering facilities for you to use. It is located within a short walk of Royal William Yard and The Barbican where you will find a good selection of pubs and restaurants, making it an excellent place to begin your RYA Day Skipper course in Devon.

Plymouth is the starting location for our RYA Day Skipper, Devon. Arrive at 18:00 the evening before you set sail.

Typical student to instructor ratio is 3:1. Maximum student ratio is 4:1. Maximum purchase online is for 3 attendees. Please contact us if you would like to book more places.

Additional information

Pre-course experience

5 days, 100 miles, 4 night hours on board a sailing yacht.

Assumed knowledge

Theory to the level of Day Skipper. It is recommended you attend the Day Skipper shore-based course beforehand.

Minimum duration

5 days.

Minimum age

16.
Under 18s MUST be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Course Content

Preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making, night cruising.

Cost

Price stated is per person. If opting to pay a deposit, full payment must be received 8 weeks prior to your sailing date. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions.

Included

5 nights accommodation aboard the yacht, your own double cabin*, freshly laundered sheets, pillows and pillowcases, meals aboard the yacht, mooring fees, gas and fuel, fully-qualified Yachtmaster instructor.

* Couples share unless separate cabins are requested. Please discuss your requirements at the point of your booking.

Location

King Point Marina, Plymouth, Devon is the starting location. Arrive 18:00 the evening before you set sail.

Car Parking

You are welcome to enter the marina car park to drop off passengers and bags but will need to relocate your car to the nearby pay and display car park. This is the Western Approach car park (an 11-minute walk away from the marina).

Cancellation

Please refer to the Terms and Conditions on our website. You are strongly recommended to take out insurance in the event of your cancellation outside our Terms and Conditions.

Devon Sailing Experiences may need to cancel upon advice received from the Skipper based on forecast sailing conditions. You will be notified 3 days prior to your sail. In this case, please refer to our Terms and Conditions which can be found on our website.

We are only able to run our RYA courses with a minimum of 3 students.
